At What Age Are You No Longer Young?

At what age are you no longer young?

A new survey by www.SeekingArrangement.com asked 1000 people this question. 37% of women and 39% of men said 28 is the age when you are no longer young. 27% of women and 24% of men said age 30.

From the survey, they list 10 signs you are truly grown up:

• Your career is more important than your sex life.
• You switch from listening to Radio 1 to Radio 2.
• You want to buy a property rather than rent.
• You have no idea what is number 1 in the charts.
• You start looking for a husband or wife rather a boyfriend or girlfriend.
• You prefer Strictly Come Dancing to X Factor.
• You would rather go on holiday with a person you are in a relationship with than a group of friends.
• You would rather cook for yourself than rely on a ready meal or takeaway.
• You would rather live on your own than share a flat or house.
• You stop going to nightclubs.

In my opinion, “young” is subjective. Asking “At what age do you grow up?” may have been a better question for the survey. One can remain youthful at any age through the right state of mind, diet, and exercise.

Brides With Cold Feet 2.5 Times More Likely to Divorce Within Four Years

According to a study involving 232 couples in Los Angeles by a UCLA doctoral student in psychology, brides who had doubts about getting married were two and a half times more likely to divorce four years later than brides who didn’t have cold feet before the wedding.

More information here: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-204_162-57514029/brides-cold-feet-may-predict-divorce/

It’s no surprise that a marriage may be in trouble from the start if the bride and, or groom are excessively anxious about their prospects for a successful marriage. Considering almost 60% of American marriages end in divorce, along with the high rates of cheating, the chances of a life-long, mutually rewarding, monogamous marriage are slim.

Marriage for the sake of marriage, attempting to solidify a tenuous romantic connection with a legally binding agreement, is always a bad idea.

Do Cougar Relationships Last?

If an older woman who enters a relationship with a significantly younger man thinks that it is going to last forever, is she fooling herself?

Marta, a journalist in her 30s, thinks so, “While at first the young man gets a few high fives, [cougars] are tinged with taboo,” she says. “I actually think older men who date young women are given a harder time and seen as bigger creeps… When we think of a cougar we think of an older women who is sexy, strong and a little dangerous. She’s certainly virile and viable – but again, the idea of a younger man and an older woman is still more of a novelty than a realistic basis for a relationship.”

“I learned that while I was perfectly permitted to want to chase young men sexually, my interest in having relationships with these men was regarded in a much darker light. They’d quickly come to fear that I was attempting to tie them down, more so than a young woman might.

“When you go into certain affairs knowing logically you are being used for novelty sex, at times that can be damaging to your self esteem. Of course plenty of older women have beautiful relationships with younger men, but overall the attitude is ‘why is this woman falling for this young dude who is destined to leave her?'”

In my experience as a matchmaker, I found that in relationships where there was a significant age difference, it was more likely to last if the man was older, but much more likely to be shorter term for both if the younger partner was under age 28 or so when they met. Even if they stay together, the relationship will often eventually transform into something other than a more traditional or romantic one.

One study that looked at the age preferences in 22,400 singles ads on dating websites in 14 countries, found few men actively seeking older women for a relationship. However, the proportion of relationships where women were at least 10 years older than their partners rose 23% between 1996 and 2006.

West Bank Women Can Now Divorce–But Only if They Have Not Had Sex

New Palestinian divorce laws in the West Bank now allow Muslim women to divorce their husbands.

There is a catch though. The women are only allowed to divorce their husbands if they have not had sex.

Under current Islamic law, men can easily divorce their wives.

More information here: http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=516854

It’s fascinating to compare the marriage and divorce customs around the world. In America, for example, at this time, women have far greater power in divorce court than men, relating to child support, alimony, and visitation rights.

It’s estimated that 70% of divorces in America are initiated by women; in the majority of cases, women have far less to lose financially than their husbands.

Marriage isn’t for everyone, but if you’re going to get married, make sure you approach it with common sense and your eyes wide open.

Increasing Number of Chinese Professional Women Avoiding Marriage

Approximately only 5% of city-dwelling Chinese women in their late 20s were still single in 1982. However, big city Chinese ladies are now shunning marital tradition and that figure has skyrocketed to 27% today.

A growing percentage of Older Chinese women in their 30s and 40s are also putting off or totally avoiding marriage. More information here: http://www.sfgate.com/business/article/China-s-professional-women-bucking-tradition-3815363.php

More and more Chinese women are placing more importance on career prospects than getting married. It may also be that fewer are marrying today because they refuse to rush to find a marriage partner just to be married for the sake of being married; it’s no longer a social stigma to be a single Chinese woman, just like in other Asian countries like Japan.

Sociologist: Key To Happy Marriage is Honest Infidelity

Catherine Hakim, author of “The New Rules: Internet Dating, Playfairs and Erotic Power,” recommends that marriage partners give each other freedom to pursue extramarital affairs; the honesty and openness will actually bring them closer together and foster more marital happiness.

“Nordic countries are already way ahead of the game. Couples openly discuss ‘parallel relationships’ within marriage. These range from affairs between work colleagues lasting years to holiday flings lasting a few days. Almost half of Finnish men and almost one third of Finnish women have had at least one significant parallel relationship. Yet marriage is a protected and respected institution in these countries, where families can function and flourish without compromise.”

More information here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/relationships/9486351/The-recipe-for-happiness-An-enduring-marriage-and-an-affair-with-lots-of-sex.html

It certainly sounds logical. After a marriage couple’s sex life cools, and it invariably does, often times one or both want to fulfill the natural need for intimacy with a new sexual partner, while still maintaining their marriage. Considering both people in the marriage are agreeable on this matter, and that safe sex is practiced, it’s a reasonable option for the adventurous.

Top 5 Regrets of Divorced People

Dr. Terri Orbuch, a psychologist and research professor at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research, asked 210 divorcees what they had learned from their mistakes. Their advice includes the following five points:

1) Show your partner you love them as often as you can.

2) Discuss money and devise a plan you both can live with.

3) Let go of the past, including exes.

4) Blame the relationship and not each other.

5) Communicate more effectively.

Good advice, but even knowing and practicing it will not prevent all divorces. Why? Here’s a comment under the article that sums it up:

“If the perspective of divorced people is so valuable, why do second marriages fail at a higher rate than first ones? Sorry, but the advice is the same from every perspective. The problem is that people change during relationships. Sometimes in parallel, sometimes in perpendicular.

And one more:

“‘Want great marriage advice? Ask a divorced person.’ Then why do 2nd marriages fail at a 70% rate? What bs. The bottom line is that so many of these people getting divorced never should have been married in the first place. They’re simply uncouple-able.”

.

Does Marriage Drive People to Drink?

Can marriage cause people to drink more? A new study suggests marriage appears to cause more drinking among middle-aged women, while divorce seems to increase drinking for middle-aged men.

The findings suggest that “marriage and divorce have different consequences for men’s and women’s alcohol use,” said study author Corinne Reczek, assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati. “For men, it’s tempered by being married and exacerbated by being divorced.”

Researchers already knew men tend to drink more than women, but in recent years women have been catching up, Reczek said. They’ve also found that men tend to slow down their drinking when they’re married, especially for the first time, she said.

First Date Averages: British First Have Sex After Four Dates

A survey including 100,000 British dating site members found that, on average, it takes two dates for the first kiss and four dates to have sex for the first time.

More information here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2188819/Dating-milestones-revealed-new-survey.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

It would be fascinating to find out the averages in other countries. It would also be interesting to know if these figures are accurate; people notoriously don’t tell the truth about their sex lives, particularly in a survey for strangers to read. It’s very possible those dating firsts are happening sooner than reported.
